Biography

Nina Simone, born Eunice Waymon, grew up in Tryon, North Carolina, where she was a child prodigy on piano and played in her local church.

She built a career that moved freely between classical technique, jazz, blues, folk and protest music.

Carolina story

Her childhood home in Tryon has been recognized as a historic site, and her formative musical training happened in the North Carolina mountains.

"Mississippi Goddam" and "Four Women" placed her permanently at the center of the civil rights era's music.
