MC Sha-Rock

MC Sha-Rock, born Sharon Green in Wilmington, North Carolina, is widely recognized as hip-hop's first female MC, performing with the Funky 4 + 1 in the Bronx.

The group's television appearance in 1981 was among the first national broadcasts of live hip-hop performance.

Her birth in Wilmington ties North Carolina directly to hip-hop's founding generation — a connection that is frequently overlooked in the state's own music history.
