Biography
J. Cole, born Jermaine Cole, was born on a military base in Germany and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He signed to Roc Nation and released his debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story in 2011.
He has since released a run of albums as both rapper and producer, and founded the label Dreamville.
Carolina story
Fayetteville is not a background detail in his catalog — it is a recurring character, from the 2014 Forest Hills Drive title to the way he narrates the neighborhoods that raised him.
Dreamville Festival, staged in Raleigh, brought a nationally scaled music festival to North Carolina and put the state on the touring map for a new generation.
Music
Career & impact
Cole proved a North Carolina artist could reach the very top of American rap without moving the story somewhere else — and then built a label and a festival that pulled attention back to the state.
