Doc Watson was a guitarist and singer from Deep Gap in Watauga County, North Carolina, blind from infancy.
His flatpicking technique transformed the acoustic guitar's role in traditional American music.

Watson stayed in the North Carolina mountains his whole life, and MerleFest in Wilkesboro — founded in memory of his son — remains one of the country's major roots music gatherings.
